I'm sure we have all heard the famous quote, "Let medicine be thy food and food be thy medicine"-Hippocrates
Hippocrates hit the nail on the head! To start healing, we must start eating right. Eating right, means eating healthy and whole foods. It may feel impossible, but it is doable. Here is a challenge for you.
Start by eliminating all greasy and fried foods that you buy at a fast food restaurant. If you don't eat out, eliminate all processed foods for two weeks. Next, prepare your meals at home. If you work outside of the home, designate one day a week to preparing your meals for the week. This will prevent eating out and you will save a lot of money too. Its also important to eat more fruits and vegetables (organic is best, but we can't always find them or afford them). Eat less animal products and meat and eliminate cooking oils (you would be surprised that water is all you need to saute vegetables in a frying pan.) Your plate should be 3/4 full of vegetables. Vegetables in large quantities can be filling. Your desserts should consist of a healthy smoothie or fruit. One of my favourite desserts or snacks is an apple cut up with peanut butter or almond butter. Even "Ants on a log" is delicious! Just cut up some celery and add peanut butter and raisins on top. Our kids also love a ripe banana sliced in two with peanut butter and maple syrup drizzled on top. You can top the banana with raisins. Try your best to avoid all processed sugars, cookies, chips, etc. After just one month you will begin feeling so much better. If you introduce any of these processed foods after one month of following a healthier lifestyle I can assure you the foods that you had been eating in the past will begin to taste like chemicals, metals and will be unpleasant tasting. It's amazing how our body feel after a healthy detox and our palate quickly recognizes something that shouldn't be ingested by sending messages to our brain that it has been tampered with. That's because all the processed food doesn't come in its whole, natural form that it was meant to. Does your food come directly from the earth, or a factory where it was processed and made by man? Think twice before reaching for something on the grocery store shelf. Spend your time in the fruits and vegetable section as much as possible. This is where you find the healing foods.
Health Bonus: Eliminating these foods can make a big difference in your overall health and well-being:
-gluten
-dairy
-soy
-sugar
-corn
Make a food diary once you begin introducing these foods above after you have eliminated them for a minimum of 4 weeks. Sometimes, this will give you an indication of what foods you cannot tolerate, or which ones have been making you sick. Good luck, and please comment below if you try this.
