The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
Smoothies vs Juicing- Ding, Ding, Ding!!!! Smoothies take 1st place in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, juicing has its benefits too and some smoothies can be unhealthy depending on what concoction you're creating. Juicing tends to spike blood sugar levels and once something is juiced it loses the necessary fibers that your body depends on for healthy digestion. If you are looking for a fruit to add to your smoothie that is high in fiber, RASPBERRIES are a great source. Just 1 cup of raspberries has 8 grams of fiber. I usually add a handful of frozen raspberries, strawberries or blueberries to my smoothies. I also GO BANANAS for Bananas in my smoothies, as they too, are a great source of fiber and they make smoothies thick and creamy. I usually buy a bunch of bananas from the supermarket and allow them to ripen on my counter in hopes that they don't become a fruit fly's feast. Once the bananas are ripe, I peel the skin and discard the peels in a compost bin and place the bananas in glass container or a freezer zip-lock bag and place them in my freezer.
On the Go- I don't know about you, but I'm busy, so I'm always in search of recipes that are quick and easy, and I can take them with me on the road or on my way to work. This is just one of the many reasons why I love my smoothies! Smoothies buy me time, and they are also packed with vitamins and nutrients, if made correctly. I usually use water for the base of my smoothie, especially if I'm adding kale or collard greens. Whenever I'm using kale or collard greens in my smoothies, I like to add frozen blueberries among other fruits as it hides the little green monster from the kiddos. Psst, it's a mommy's dirty little secret and what they don't know won't kill them, rather make them healthier and stronger!
Let's keep smoothies REFRESHING! Unless you enjoy warm smoothies, I suggest adding frozen fruit to your smoothies and put a container of ground flax seed and chia seeds in your refrigerator to keep them cold until you are ready to add them to your smoothies. Nothing is more dissatisfying than a warm smoothie on a hot summer day.
What about SWEET TOOTH CRAVINGS? Don't worry, I've got you covered! Instead of adding unnatural sweetener try a banana or have a date. Not a date that you would find on Tinder or Bumble (I hear there are a lot of imposters) same goes with the products we buy with the false advertising from the supermarket that claim to be low in sugar, natural or healthy. Reach for an actual FRUIT DATE. Dates improve bone health, skin, digestion, lowers cholesterol, rich in iron, proteins and vitamins. Why not have a date? Add unsweetened almond milk, a frozen banana and handful of frozen strawberries. You can even add some vanilla protein powder.
How much do I LOVE SMOOTHIES? Just as much as I've enjoyed sharing this information with you. Just one smoothie a day is a good start. Any high speed blender should work. I use a Vitamix Blender but even the smaller blenders like NutriBullet or Magic Bullet will do the trick. Please subscribe and check out my smoothie recipes and give them a try. Until next time, remember to feed, heal, and love your body!
